At Riverside, the curriculum is designed/developed keeping in mind the age, developmental milestones and overall well-being of the child. The ‘BIG IDEA’ for K2 is :

The students of K2 build an awareness that moves from known (i.e., self) to unknown (i.e the world at  large) and identify the similarities and differences.

This is done by building an understanding of how every form has a specific function.

Language: Using language to interact/communicate with the world

  • Listening:   developing the skills of comprehension and responding to information through:
    • Congloms
    • Daily conversations
    • Story time listening and responding to stories
    • Cinema time
  • Speaking: developing the skills of speaking (fluency in the language, clarity of speech, concrete vocabulary) and applying it with their peers within and outside the classroom through:
    • Sharing time
    • Retelling short stories
    • Peer interaction
    • Answer questions about the story/events
    • Use of describing words (for objects, feeling, people etc) and action words
  • Reading:
    • Pre-Reading skills:
      • Treating books with care
      • Reading from left to right
      • Establish author, title and illustrator of a book
      • Understand that spoken words can be written
      • Decode pictures
    • Decoding phonic sounds: blends, long and short vowels
    • Sight words (words that cannot be broken phonetically but have to be read as a whole word)
    • Application of phonemic awareness (decoding skills) through identifying simple words and reading sentences in familiar and unfamiliar text, in and outside school (e.g during visits).
  • Writing:
    • Letter formation
    • Use of blends and sight words in sentences
    • Sentences – with focus on using the correct sentence structure
    • Follow the rules of language: Capitals (Beginning of the sentence and special names), fullstop.

Note: Emphasize on the formation of the letter and sentence structure.

Logical mathematical: Developing number sense (Term 1)

 1)       Number Sense: Using Place Value (0-50)

o    Quantification

o    Symbolization

o    Comparison

o    Ordering

o    Sequencing

2)       Number Operation: Addition and subtraction (0-9)

o       Relevance in real life

o       Mathematical representation of the problems and solving it

o    Decoding the word problems and solving it

o    Creating word problems for a given operation

  3)     Time: Decoding the calendar; months of the year, days of the week, date, parts of the day

  4)      Geometry: Recognition of the shapes

  • Circle, semi-circle, oval, crescent, square, rectangle, diamond, triangle, heart.
  • Creating figures using tan grams

5)       Data Interpretation:

·         Pictographs

Term 2

1)       Number Sense: (0-99)

2)       Number operations: (2digit without carry over’s and borrowing) (0-99)- addition and subtraction

o    Mathematical representation of the problems and solving it

o    Decoding the word problems and solving it

o    Creating word problems for a given operation

3)     Time: awareness of the important times during the day (break time is at 10 o’clock, lunch time is at 1 o’clock and home time is at 3 o’clock

4)   Estimation and measurement- understand the relationship between;

o    Size and weight

o    Width and capacity

o    Length and capacity

o    Distance and size

          5)       Money Unit- Awareness – nothing comes for free; recognizing the denominations and comparing them.

Building General Awareness: will be done through

Adaptation Unit:

Understanding goal

  • Students will understand that every form has a specific function.
  • Students will understand how specific forms in animals helps them to survive in the natural habitat

13th April 2013

Dear Parents,

Important Dates:

18th April- Student Led Conference (SLC) followed by Potluck. This will be a last working day for K1 and K2 children.

30th April - Parents can have a look of the report card online at http://riverside.three60.in.

13th June- School reopens

13th - 30th June- School timings will be from 8 am to 1 pm

1st July onwards- Regular routine as per first term (Monday-Tuesday: 8 am to 3 pm and Wednesday to Friday: 8 am to 1 pm).

Highlights:

  • K1 and K2 children had a gala time during the water play.
  • K2 children had Buddy Interaction with Grade 3 for a tour around the Instillations put up in different spaces. It was good to see children taking interest to tell stories not only from their own group but also from their peer’s group.

Language Concepts: Using language to interact/communicate with the world

     -      Recap of Blends, Diagraphs and Magical ‘e’ words

     -      Recap of Sight words through Dictation

     -      Topic writing

     -      Picture writing

Logical Mathematics:

  • Recap of all concepts of number sense and number operation

Port Folios:

Children are working for their port folios to showcase the work that they have done over the year. They have selected their worksamples to show their growth from the time they came to K2, and to the end of the year. Children are selecting worksheets that show how they have grown in different areas of Language, Math, Program of Inquiry etc.

Scientific thinking:

  • Children explored about the reflections using mirrors. Children had to position their mirrors in the sunlight in such a way that all their reflection falls at the same place.
  • Children also realized that if the sun moves to the other direction then the reflection will also move or disappear. They will have to again set the mirrors in a way that the reflection comes.

  • Children had their final session with Vaibhav Sir where they recalled all their experiences – Darkroom, shadow, reflection, light and transparent, etc.

Conglom time

o          Story telling

- By teachers: To develop their listening skill

- By students: To develop their speaking skills

o        Discussed the relevance of Student Led Conference

o        Self and Peer Evaluation: Children were evaluated for 3 main criteria – Social & emotional skills, Language skills and Math skills by Self, Peers and Teachers. They had to evaluate their growth in reference to these criteria and rate themselves. Children were very honest and gave feedback based on their understanding and performance throughout the year. It was good to see children having clarity of thoughts at this age.

o        Movie time: Ice Age 3, The Lion King

Regards,

Archana & Garvita
